I first got this topic when I was in church praying. I was praying to God and reminding Him of His promises for me in His Word. I was telling Him how much I wanted to be of impact in my generation and how I want to do it not because I want to write things that people would give me accolades for, but because I have a close relationship with Him and I yearn to know more of Him. Then I was praying to have a deep hunger and thirst for Him . . . As I was doing my devotion later on, the same thing crossed my mind again. So here I am writing about it and looking forward to learning as well.
Psalm 63 verse 1 (MSG) ‘God – you’re my God! I can’t get enough of you! I’ve worked up such hunger and thirst for God, travelling across dry and weary deserts.’
David, in his psalms, spoke about how much he was hungry and thirsty for God. He was a man that had been with God and had tasted of His goodness. He knew that God is a good God. He knew there was no other place he could go to to get satisfaction and joy. He knew the only way to live and enjoy life was through being in God’s generous love. He had a personal relationship with God.
Job was a man that had been through a lot of sufferings. He lost his sons and daughters, he lost his wealth, his wife wasn’t very much interested in him, yet he did not waver in wanting to be close to God. At the end of it all he said in Job 42:5-6 (MSG), ‘5I admit I once lived by rumours of you; now I have it all firsthand – from my own eyes and ears! 6 I’m sorry – forgive me. I’ll never do that again, I promise! I’ll never again live on crusts of hearsay, crumbs or rumor.’
It’s not just about knowing about God, but more importantly truly knowing Him. Not just the facts about Him. There’s a difference. Matthew 6:33 says we should seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all other things shall be added to us. There are so many distractions in this world, so many things we feel are important to us and decide to chase after, while leaving God at the back of our minds. As I learnt during devotion, (Open heavens and The Word for today), Seeking God first could be in giving out tithes to Him and a show of our respect and love for Him, seeking God could be worshipping Him from our hearts despite the troubles we’re currently facing and so on.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could have a first-hand experience of God? And if you have experienced it, isn’t your hunger and thirst deepened to know more about Him? I feel the more you know about God, the more you want to know. Your hunger and thirst for Him isn’t quenched. If it was quenched then you wouldn’t desire to know more about Him, right? The bible tells us to come to Him who can quench our thirst and make us satisfied. You are satisfied to know you have reached your final bus-stop. You aren’t going anywhere despite whatever oppositions that may come your way. But then you are never satisfied with just whatever little you know about God, you want to know more of Him.
Imagine you love someone and later on, you both got married. You love the person so much you want to spend the rest of your life with the person, you want to get to know the person. You want to spend time with the person. They say you can never know a person fully, even if you’ve been married to the person for a number of years, you get to find out something new! So also the same with God, we get to know more about Him as we get to deepen our relationship with Him. I can’t help but over-emphasize it.
In self-retrospection: Why do I do the things I do? Do I hunger and thirst after God? Do I seek Him for who He is or what He offers?
But then, this hunger and thirst is really for those who have dedicated their lives to God.
Matthew 5:6 (AMP) ‘Blessed and fortunate and happy and spiritually prosperous (in that state in which the born-again child of God enjoys His favor and salvation) are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God), for they shall be completely satisfied!’
As I write this, I inwardly pray to know more about God and His ways, not because I’m looking for something to write, not because I want to impress other people or any other silly thing, but because I want to personally know more about Him and have a close relationship with Him. That’s my desire and I hope that’s yours too.
If you haven’t yet surrendered to Him, I plead with you to do so. Just ask for Him to forgive you of your sins and tell Him you accept Him as your Lord and personal Saviour. Welcome to the Kingdom of God! If you just said the prayer, feel free to contact me at email@example.com.
Bible quote for the day:
Jeremiah 29:13 (AMP) ‘Then you will seek Me, inquire for, and require Me [as a vital necessity] and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.
Prayer: Father, please give me a strong desire for you. Draw me closer to You . . .
