Last week it started off with how love in the world is waxing cold and sadly among believers. No matter the level of hate going all around us, as Christians, we are to show a better example in loving others as God wants us to. ” The more we love God, the more we love others. Loving others is an evidence of our love for God.” If you missed out on the first part, click here to catch up.
If at all we don’t show love to anyone else, the body of believers should be different. Love should be us, our walk, our talk, our lifestyle. Not gossiping about each other, getting angry with each other, holding grudges against each other, getting jealous at the prosperity of other believers and the likes.
How many of us pray for each other?
Do we encourage each other?
We should practice love, like consciously live it out from a pure heart. Sincerely appreciate your brother, your sister. Pray for a brother or sister. Leave a comment to encourage a sister(you don’t know what she might be going through), give to the meet someone’s need, encourage someone with your words, speak the truth in love, correct in love, forgive easily, open up your home to someone, be hospitable, rejoice with others, share in the burdens of others.
Let’s put away all our selfish pride and love one another from a sincere heart. I’ll emphasise on the sincerity of the love we show. Majority of these issues stem from our heart, nobody can see our hearts but God does and whatever service we claim to do in love but is really an insincere love, God does not honour even if man may (1Cor 13: 1-3).
If we can’t love in the church, how can we love those that are without. Many unbelievers don’t believe in church/God today because they see how everyone is against each other in many churches. We are supposed to compel them to Christ with the love we show them. Whether they hate you or not, whether they are your enemies or not, we are to still love them.
‘But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you’ Matthew 5:44
‘For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?’ Matthew 5:46 (43-48).
I believe everyone knows one unbeliever or the other. They are at our schools, our work places, on the buses we take, the streets we live etc. We are instructed to love them also and not just show love to believers only. Be courteous, say thank you, appreciate them, give them a gift, speak some words of encouragement. Honestly if we really lived out love to believers and unbelievers evangelism becomes a lot easier and the church will grow.
On a personal note, God has been dealing with me in this very area. I found myself many times being rude to particular people, hurting people with my words (either as a joke or as sarcasm), being unhospitable, being envious of others and not really wishing others well. As I realised all this was still in me I knew I had to do something about it. As I prayed I was led to the scripture below.
‘This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.’ Gal 5:16 (16-26).
The question is then how do you walk in the spirit?
You walk in love, walk in Joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and self-control. Every second of every day, consciously walk in the spirit. Check your actions, your motives your thoughts. If at every time of every single day, your actions are evidence of these fruits, you can’t go wrong. If at any time you find yourself acting contrary to the fruits, take yourself back into the spirit.
Don’t get me wrong it’s not by human effort, but we have a conscious work to do in putting our flesh to death. As the spirit and the flesh war within us, we choose which to yield to. As we yield to the spirit we live out the life of Love. (Rom 6:6, 12-14, 16,22).
‘Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?’ Rom 6:16.
‘But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life’ Rom 6:22.
Most importantly as Christians this is the fulfilment of the whole law, it is a command of God and obeying this command is evidence of the love we have for God. You can pray and ask God to help you to love as he desires you to. And I pray that God helps us to love each other genuinely and that the blessings of obedience will abound in our lives, our homes and our churches.
‘And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity’ 1 Cor 13:13
Let’s follow God’s lead in loving others as He wants us to… it’s only by His grace alone.
How has it been with you loving others you feel may not deserve it? You can share your thoughts/experience below and let’s talk about it.
