Negative Thinking and Emotions

Negativity is very productive in making you feel terrible. You dwell on things that aren’t right with you or imagine/feel things you planned may not work out the way you want them to; right before you even start. And when one negative thought crosses your mind… more and more start coming in.

I find myself going through the motions of negative thinking and it affects how I work and how my day plays out. Once I begin to think how things aren’t going the way I want them to, how I’m not where I ought to be, how my writing isn’t really how I want it to and so many other things – it weighs me down. And in turn, these thoughts affect how I feel (negative emotions). I begin to feel bad, sad and depressed . . . and trust me I’m not very good company during those times.

How often do negative thoughts and emotions overwhelm us? And how can we get rid of them?

Of recent I’ve been working on having a positive mindset and watched a video by Rhonda Byrne, The Secret, and it opened my eyes to a lot of things of which I would list two of them.

You attract what you think. And I can link that to what the bible says in Proverbs 23: 7, for as he thinks in his heart, so is he. We are what we think. I am what I think.

Negative thoughts attracts negative reality. When we think of all the negative things happening in our lives (which we might have attracted in the first place), and think of all the things we don’t want to happen – we attract them into our lives! But It means if I can attract negative things, I can also attract positive, beautiful things that I desire. But first I have to think it.

As Christians, we are told to have the same mind that our Elder Brother, Christ, has; a mind that’s filled with positive things. We should search the scriptures on what God says about us. We are told to daily renew our minds according to Romans 12: 1-2, to bring into captivity every thoughts to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5), to think of lovely things (Philippians 4:8), and so on.

Renewing our minds aligns us to the way God wants us to think.

When we focus more on the problems than what God says or what the word of God says, then it affects us negatively; because our thinking becomes tainted and our emotions take a toll on us.

For example, Fear is a negative emotion. It cripples us from moving forward and keeps us stuck at where we are. The Bible says we have not been given a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7)

There was a day it (negative thoughts) was all just coming to me and I subjected them to the obedience of Christ. Another day I didnt like how my day started but I was determined not to let it ruin my day. I also listen to messages from Joyce Meyer, which helps me as well. (I’m also planning to read Joyce Meyer’s book, Battlefield of the Mind.) Some days I win the battle and other days I don’t. But I’m determined this year not to subject myself to negative thoughts and emotions.

I can do this. We can do this. We can win the battle waging war in our minds with God’s help and putting in the necessary effort in rejecting it when it comes. It’s a new year and we have to change the way we did things before to get better results. #newthings2016 God help us all. Tell me about yoyr experiences with negative thoughts and emotions. Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
