Matthew 5 verse 13 (MSG), Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.
There is a saying I love so much; when a purpose is unknown abuse is inevitable. Now, let’s imagine we are transported back in time to the first century. I don’t know much about that time but I assume there was no Michael Faraday, no Thomas Edison, no general electric, Michael Tesla, Columb and the crew. So imagine the candle light is so important, it’s all you got.
So at night time when you put on some candles, you must mean business. I guess light may also produce some heat and if the candle was scented then we had perfume features as well. Nonetheless the primary and most important purpose of lighting a candle was for illumination. Now, just as no one hides a light under a basket – I think for obvious reasons (it either doesn’t shine well, or burns through the basket or dies out ‘cause you can’t have fire without oxygen). It’s the exact same way we humans need to be but on a stand and not under a basket.
Matthew 5 verse 14 – 15 (MSG), ‘Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand – shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.’
When I was told to write this, I smiled. I smiled ‘cause we are light and I have met so many 18 – 35 year-olds who not only don’t know they are light, but also don’t know their purpose on earth. If a candle was competing with a stove/fire-place because they are all fire, in one way or another they all generate heat, then the candle would fail miserably.
I think it was Albert Einstein who said, if you judge a fish by it’s ability to climb a tree then the fish would always be a failure. Immediately, we need to go on a purpose quest! Don’t be a light that is hidden under a basket. You deserve the very best that life has got to offer and you deserve to die empty. Les Brown says, ‘You have greatness within you’. It’s left to you to discover what that purpose is.
The lamp-stand is the place of fulfilling purpose and destiny. Light put on a stand does better to everyone including the light itself. I can’t overemphasise how important is is to immediately discover your ‘stand’. It’s very painful to meet parents or elderly ones who haven’t discovered their stand. It’s like existing without knowing why. There are books already out there to help you with this so there’s no need to re-invent the wheel or compete with the gurus. I suggest Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. It helped me personally.
In closing, I would point out the saying of Mark Twain – ‘There are two days important to a man, the day he is born and when he discovers why.’ the world is waiting for your awesome light to shine out. You are light. Find the stand and stand tall.
