I was having my quiet-time when the below passage struck a chord in me.
Matthew 13: 19, 23, 36 ‘ 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path.
23 But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.’
How many times do we actually study the word of God? Yes, probably we take time out to read the bible passages included in the devotional we use. Or if you don’t have any devotional, maybe you decide to read a few verses of the bible to get you through the day or assure yourself that you’re actually reading your bible.
Whichever of the two we decide to choose, are we really studying the word of God? Am I really studying it the way God wants me to? Jesus sat on a boat on the lake while He told the people gathered there different parables. He said various stories of which the disciples wondered at why Jesus was speaking to the people in parables.
Matthew 13:11 ‘He replied, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.”
Those with understanding of the parable would grasp the understanding of the word of God, and I want to believe they truly desire to know it. Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance . . . Once we hear and understand the word of God, we would be given more understanding of it.
Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him . . . And those who lack understanding, and the deep desire to understand the word of God, the little they have would be taken.
The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom has been given to us Christians. Not to them. Not to everyone. Not to the unbelievers. But to us Christians. We have been given the privilege to hear and understand the word of God. We have been given the HolySpirit who teaches us all things. When we are studying the word of God, and don’t understand what we’re reading, we have the opportunity to ask the HolySpirit to teach us. We can pray to God for understanding. The secrets of the kingdom is for us to know . . .
And when we have received the word of God and understand it, it produces a huge harvest in our lives; but this is dependent on how we apply it in our lives. So many of us are living far below what God wants or expects of us, and this is also attributed to how little of the word of God we apply.
Hearing the word – understanding it – Applying it – A huge Harvest In Our Lives!
What’s the point of getting to know the great riches we have as children of God – The promises God has for us – and speak them into our lives. The bible tells us if we give, it would be given back to us, if we sow we would reap. These are divine principles.
Matthew 13:36 ‘Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.”
Even Jesus’ disciples, when they didn’t understand what Jesus was saying, went to meet Jesus for an explanation of the parables he said, and Jesus explained it to them.
Joshua 1 verse 8 tells us to meditate on the word of God day and night so that we may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Did you get that? We would be prosperous and successful if we are careful to do everything written in the word of God.
There are so many benefits attached when we understand the word of God.
– We have freedom. Psalm 119 verse 73, also John 8:31-32 tells us that we shall know the truth and the truth shall set us free. The HolySpirit is our Teacher. Where is this truth? In the word of God. Another way of knowing the truth is knowing Jesus. That’s the very first step.
– We would have understanding about things happening around us; Proverbs 4:7. It sheds light on things we can’t figure out on our own; Psalm 119 verse 130.
– We would prosper. The bible lets us know that when we pay our tithes, we would be blessed. Malachi 3 : 10-12
– We would know who we are and how precious we are to God.
– We would know our Inheritance in Christian.
– We would get to know more about God’s love for us, and so on . . . There are numerous benefits!
Are we too distracted like Martha in the bible to take time out to learn at the feet of Jesus? Let’s make amends and spend quality time at studying and meditating on the word of God.
What other benefits can we get when we understand the word of God? I would love to hear from you!
Bible quote for the day:
This is my prayer for you: that your love will grow more and more; that you will have knowledge and understanding with your love. Philippians 1:9 (NCV)
Have a great day!
