If you love Me . . .
In this, the children of God and the children of the devil are made manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother, for this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another,-1John 3v10-11
As a Christian, I used to think loving those who loved me was the way to go, I mean it was the message preached, it was the kind of nature I had grown with and so when quotes and posters of loving my friends aligned with my natural thinking, I just felt it was the way to go. I felt Love was a feeling and not a duty or responsibility. I was wondering if I had to force myself to love someone, it wasn’t natural.
But God wants us to do the unnatural thing. Why? Because He saved us from our natural state and brought us into the supernatural state of bearing His seal, His love and His bond of perfection.
He made it a commandment. In every part of the Bible, if we allow God illuminate His word for us, we see God’s love sprinkled everywhere, we see how far He was willing to go for Love, we see that we didn’t even know what Love meant till He came to show us.
And then He required us to do the same.
We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.-1John3v14-15.
Wow…, how can we be dead when we have Christ already you may ask? I thought after giving my life to Jesus, I am alive, I am a new man, I’ve passed from death to life already by the redemptive power and blood of Jesus Christ as the word teaches me.
But the Love commandment was the greatest of all God gave us, to abide in Him. If you want to have sweet fellowship with God, then Love is the way. Love is life, love is victory, love opens God’s word and you begin to see it like you’ve never seen it before.
So if you’re a Christian and you don’t love your brother, you can’t be claiming to love God. It’s not possible. You harbor unforgiveness, anger, envy or jealousy against people, or pray against your enemies rather than for them, then loving God would be difficult.
For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.-1John4v20.
God gave a criteria through Jesus which goes like this:
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;-Matt 5v44
And why does He give this command?
That you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous-verse 55
Meaning if you can’t show love, or pray against your enemies rather than bless them like Jesus did, if you can’t love your brother, then you need to start wondering who your father is. Is God our father? Or we have another father we choose to follow in His ways?
There’s no two ways about this Love walk. It’s the fastest route you can take to God rather than pray and fast for days. God would rather attend to a man who has chosen to love like Jesus instead of some man that is only bent on prospering so he can splash dirty water on people the way they’ve done to him in the past or parade His wealth out of a love-depraved heart.
For Love is not boastful and does not parade itself. It is vital we act like children of the God we call Father.
Love doesn’t come by confessing ‘Love is my nature’ No, I wish it was, but the day I had to pass through phases of Love tests I wouldn’t bother mentioning here, I wanted to cry. I believe I cried because I just wondered if I would cope or survive loving someone who hated me and falsely accused me. Someone who used me even when all I did was be kind to her and her family. Someone who chose to illtreat me and wasn’t moved about it and kept on because God told me not to retaliate but love her still. God wanted me to go further and forgive her and even pray for her.
That strength to love didn’t come from me I tell you, it came from God Himself. The more you yield yourself to Him to teach you, the more He strengthens you and grants you the grace to make the memories fade away. And oh, the way He vindicates you is awesome. He even blesses you beyond words and opens doors for you, He opens His word to you and you just see rhema flowing in and out like never before.
I believe obtaining revelation from God and my walk towards becoming like Jesus is more important than my ego or choosing to hold grudges against those who have hurt me.
So love I shall, with every fibre of my being, until my last breath, until He comes to take us away, until I become more and more like Jesus and find none of me in existence anymore.
I pray you chose life today, I pray you choose Love, no matter how hard it feels.
Much love. xo!
