Living with Eternity in Mind Series

But the end and culmination of all things has now come near; keep sound minded and self-restrained and alert therefore for [the practice of] prayer.

1 Peter 4:7 AMPC

This is what we should do everyday until Jesus comes; Be sound minded, self-restrained and alert. We may get so carried away with our everyday activities and forget we have another home being prepared for us elsewhere. It may so happen that we get so accustomed to this world and it’s ways that we live our lives as though we aren’t Christians.

Yes, we have heard of and seen people who profess to be Christians yet their lifestyles say otherwise. Or putting up bumper stickers that say ‘Jesus Rules!’ yet we do opposite of what Christ would do. Or forgetting we are Christians at some moments and insulting people and so on.

Of recent I’ve been going through one form of trial and the other and it keeps me in a bad mood. It hurts to know you’re surrounded by people who hurt you (deliberate or otherwise) and you can’t really find a way out of it.

Have you ever found yourself surrounded by people you should love who make you want to do otherwise and hold grudges instead?

Galatians  5:19-21 KJV, 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

The above passage states it so clearly that if we practice all those things . . . We wouldn’t see the Kingdom of God. In other words it won’t allow us spend an eternity with Christ.

As Christians living in a world filled with temporary excitements it’s easy to get distracted and focus only on the here and now and not on the future. Let’s be real with ourselves, there are some days or moments when  we don’t consider that Jesus is coming back and rapture could occur at any minute. It’s not to live life afraid but to live life with with a sense that this isn’t our final home.

So you may ask, what prompted this topic?

I remember being in a worship session last year and one of the prayer points at the end was for us to let go of hurts and grievances we have against other people; that we should forgive. Suddenly I remembered how I hurt from what people close to me had done. I thought I had forgiven but I hadn’t ’cause of all the anger bubbling up inside me. I began asking God why I had to have such people around me and how it hurt so much.

And a question came to mind, “Do you think you would enter heaven like this?”

I felt bad. I knew I wouldn’t.  Then thoughts came to mind about how I was jealous of other people’s achievements  and it was really dawning on me… if Jesus came at that moment there was was a high possibility I wouldn’t make it.

I asked God for forgiveness.

I recalled a book I had read , The Shack, that spoke on forgiveness and how I had to forgive and pray for God to help the person. It hurt… but that was when I had a total shift in my mind. I began praying for them. Asking God to help me forgive and He dropped the topic, Living with Eternity in Mind.

It entails a lot; learning to forgive,  to live a life led by God’s Spirit and not the flesh, to live a life of love, practicing God’s Word and not just reading it and so on. We would be looking into this series for a while and I hope we all come out better after it.

We would look at questions like: what does a person living with Eternity in mind look like and how can we live that way?

Till next week! 🙂

Bible Quote for the Day: So you also must be patient. Establish your hearts [strengthen and confirm them in the final certainty], for the coming of the Lord is very near. Do not complain, brethren, against one another, so that you [yourselves] may not be judged. Look! The Judge is [already] standing at the very door.

James 5:8‭-‬9 AMPC
